If there’s anything we can all agree on, it’s that being injured or sick is the worst. It leaves us feeling uncomfortable, uncertain about the future, and—if you’re anything like me—the idle time is enough to drive you up the wall. So how do we cope?

If you read our post on four common New Year’s resolutions (and some tips for achieving them), you know that the struggle is real. Waking up on the first day of 2018 and swearing to eat better, exercise more, and lose weight?
Making these things a reality— and sustaining your New Year’s resolutions throughout the year—is far more difficult. At times, the hill will seem too steep to climb. The path will be blocked by a felled tree. Lightning will strike at the summit.
It’s in these moments it’s important to push on. We believe in you! But it’s equally as important to keep things in perspective: a resolution is a goal to be achieved through earnest hard work and discipline. And pursuing these resolutions at the expense of your health, or in counterproductive ways, defeats the purpose.

September is National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month, the perfect time to explore this serious, sometimes life-threatening heart condition that affects over 200,000 people a year in the United States alone. Atrial Fibrillation (AFib, as it’s sometimes called) is a form of abnormal heart rhythm caused by lack of coordination between the heart’s upper (atrial) and lower (ventricular) chambers. Symptoms may include palpitations, shortness of breath, sweating, or even fatigue—“drums pounding, thunder rumbling, or fish flopping” in the chest, as the Heart Rhythm Society so eloquently describes it.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s. That means that every 66 seconds, a new diagnosis is made. Many of us are, unfortunately, familiar with the rapid onset and cruel, unsettling symptoms of this disease, by virtue of watching a loved one go through it. With no cure on the immediate horizon, it is easy to feel powerless in the face of such a vicious foe. While we may not be able to claim full victory over Alzheimer’s yet, we can take certain steps to mitigate its symptoms, and help our loved ones live longer, fuller lives in the process.
